Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Mission Statement:
“Tacugama is committed to providing the best possible
facilities and care to captive Chimpanzees in Sierra Leone,
while working towards the protection and conservation of
the species in the wild.”
Objectives:
-
To collaborate with Government
to implement existing national and international wildlife
laws, especially those provisions contained in the Convention
on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES);

To partner with local law
enforcement agencies to take action and to promote Laws
against the trading of chimpanzees;

To integrate orphaned chimpanzees
into social groups, with a view to gradually rehabilitate
them into a semi-wild environment;

To increase the public’s
understanding of the plight of chimpanzees and other wildlife
through conservation education initiatives.

Resource centre/sharing information/
networking on conservation and the environment;

Care and integration of
orphaned chimps into socially viable groups for eventually
release into semi-wild enclosures;

sustainable development;

Research/survey and management
interventions to protect species, sites, habitats and
people particularly in forest and wetlands;

Collaboration/networking
with other conservation environmental organisations and
agencies.
